From Denny: As a way to teach students the election process mock elections occurred across the country last week. Right here in Louisiana, involving 88,600 students across the state from 280 public, private and home schooling, they voted President Obama into a second term. Louisiana broke for Obama by a margin of 51.29 percent to Romney's 48.71 percent.
From Angie Franklin, the gifted program teacher at Peabody Montessori in Alexandria, Louisiana, "Our objective was to make sure the kids here in the school knew what the election process was. And why it's so important, every four years, to vote."

Franklin says this mock election is the perfect way to get a new generation involved, "And it helps the kids know why all these TV ads are out, why they see the stickers everywhere on cars, and the little signs in the yard. Just helps them know what's going on in their community."
Franklin hopes this student participation from K-12 might even inspire the older generation to participate in their learning. "Just to bring up conversation with their parents. Encourage them to go out and vote next week."
This mock election did go a long way to help grow the confidence of students, helping them feel comfortable when it comes their turn to vote as adults.

Here's what I find most interesting is that Louisiana is supposed to be a predictable die-hard red state. Really? Judging by the really nasty and often racist Republican war room comments at the end of local news stories about this student mock election here in Louisiana, it's evident Romney must be experiencing serious erosion in the polls. They even attacked the children labeling them as stupid and unaware of real life. Really?

Here's what all the political and news people should be thinking about in regards to this election: Kids often echo their parents' preferences and opinions because they hear their parents discussing politics and the news in the home. Will Louisiana actually break for Obama when the final votes are tallied? That amounts to eight very precious electoral votes.
Will these same children who participated in the mock election urge - or embarrass - their parents to go vote? Will their interest ignite the interest of their parents and grandparents who may not want to look bad in the eyes of their children? This election just might bring to the polls all those millions of lapsed voters, making it a wild card election.

Frustrated American voters, furious at negative lying political campaigns |
Early voting was heavy across the nation, to the tune of 34 million votes cast. Everywhere people wanted to make sure their vote counted, angry with voter intimidation scare tactics. They stood in long lines for hours. Voter intimidation was heavy too with the Tea Party crowd out at the polls, walking around with their unofficial clipboards, pretending to be legitimate poll workers, sending voters home.
Here in Louisiana there are 2.9 million registered voters. Of those voters 340,000 decided to go to the polls for early voting. The two of us at our house joined them. Early voting in my state was up 25 percent from the 2008 presidential election numbers.

Here's an interesting voting trend, according to Women's Voices, Women Vote Action Fund: "Unmarried women — single, separated, divorced or widowed — make up over 25 percent of all voting age Americans and are one of the fastest growing demographic groups in America. Unmarried women, together with people of color, and young voters comprise the Rising American Electorate (RAE), the majority of the voting eligible voting population (53 percent) and the key to progressive success in 2012 and beyond. Unmarried women are the largest part of the RAE and they were major drivers behind progressive victories in 2006 and 2008."
How many other so-called "red states" are red any longer? The times just might be changing after all.
