Colbert Hilarious Interview: Dragon Smaug, Now Send Him To Eat Congress

From Denny:  This interview with threatening dragon Smaug from the Lord of the Rings movie prequel definitely ranks up there as Stephen's Best of All Time.  After yesterday's outrageous and obnoxious new federal budget bill passing the House, it's time to send a fire breathing dragon to Congress and this White House to eat naughty people selling out the American people.  If it survives in it's current form then expect the U. S. economy to go into a furious death spiral as Wall Street goes on a gambling spree with our money.

Why?  Check out yesterday's post after you enjoy laughing at Benedict Cumberbatch as Smaug's alter ego that has deliciously merged with the monster:  Obama Wants To Hand Over Your Money to Big Banks To Gamble As They See Fit? Seriously?

Jon Stewart, Late Nite Jokes Roundup: New Pope, Easter, Funny Politics, Gay Marriage, April Fools

2 funny video clips, lots of hilarious photo memes and great jokes!

From Denny:  How the comedy fun just keeps rockin' on!  These guys just don't give up.  They create the funniest news commentary in America.  OK, some of it is borderline tasteful but then you wouldn't be checking out this post if that mattered.

These jokes and video clips are just from the month of March 2013.  Yes, these comics are prolific and it takes a good week to round up the jokes and a few of the best clips.  If you have some additional comedy clips you really enjoyed, and want others to know about, just leave the urls in the comment box, and, thanks!

Last month the world viewed the installation of a new Pope after Pope Benedict resigned, the first to give up the job in almost 700 years.  This new Pope already did tremendous church reform in Argentina.  The entire world is holding their breath to see if Pope Francis, a Jesuit, has the nerve and ability to reform the entire Catholic Church.  While he is figuring it out hopefully he will not get poisoned by the infamous Curia Creeps who managed to kill off a number of popes over the centuries.  Meanwhile, the polls are in agreement Pope Francis is a pretty cool and humble guy, something the church has needed for a very long time: a breath of fresh air.

Of course, the comics had a field day with the awkward situation of a living former Pope and the newly installed Pope in the same timeline.  Because there was so much global media coverage about the process to figure out how to elect a new Pope while the other guy was still alive there are a multitude of jokes about that process - true and imaginary.  You know how comics roll, they have imaginary friends even as adults, so expect the unexpected.

There are a truck load of gay marriage jokes.  Every politician is suddenly wanting to get in on the act of agreeing gay marriage is fine to do now after they lost the culture war.  They all have an eye on running for President in 2016 and the country has shifted its views on gay marriage.  Most people "get it" that you don't deny other Americans their civil rights whether you agree with their lifestyle or not.  "Just Chill" is the new word, especially among Millennial Americans who don't see what all the Baby Boomer fuss is about in the first place.  If they could they would tell their grandparents two words:  Grow Up!

And, oh, the hilarious copious political jokes - for which I live to collect.  You will never experience a sad day in your life again if you bookmark any of these joke posts on any of my many blogs.  In fact, the reason I started collecting so many funny quotes and crazy political jokes highlighting absurd human behavior, was to help de-stress my fellow Americans in a down economy and chaotic job loss environment!  I guess this is where I should list the various blogs where I've parked more comedy and funny video clips for the past four years, especially of Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert:

Check Out Keith Olbermann on Current TV: Gaffe Fests From Santorum and Romney

From Denny: We all heard of former Vice President Al Gore's new Current TV network nabbing former MSNBC host Keith Olbermann to help build the fledgling network's audience.

Olbermann has continued his Countdown show, opining on the zany American politics and politicians in their grab for personal power and financial gain using suspect ways to achieve it.

In this clip he and Mother Jones' Andy Kroll examine the crazy GOP candidates who will literally say anything to get elected.

Keith used to be a sports commentator and a great one at that. If you have never listened to him then you are in for a treat. Much like Jon Stewart he is smart, able to slice and dice the facts accurately and finds himself amused or outraged by it all.

Take a look at this week's offerings. While I am enjoying this new computer it sure was a surprise to discover no speakers came with it. So, while I wait for the mail, let me know how funny are his insights. I sure have missed the guy, wishing my cable tv provider carried his show. If you like him, please call your local cable tv provider and request they carry the new network.  It's also on the website where you can easily make the request your provider.

From Countdown: Rick Santorum and Mitt Romney are allergic to facts. How else explain their recent gaffe-fests? Keith dives deeper into the truth -- and the mangling thereof -- with help from Mother Jones' Andy Kroll.

Funny Video: Happy New Year, Cartoonist Review of 2010

Get a New Year grin at the cartoonist review of our last political year.

From Denny: This is a funny review of the political year from JibJab with Prez Obama and VP Biden as puppets telling the tale of what a horrible year it was. They are glad 2010 is gone (like most of us) and welcoming the New Year of 2011. You might want to turn up the volume as it makes it easier to understand the lyrics of this catchy tune.

For anyone interested in the production of this video, go here for the complete breakdown of the scenes and the writing process: Behind The Scenes of the 2010 Year in Review

Libations Friday! Coffee Recipe and Michael Jackson Poem Tribute 3 July 2009

Featured this week is a poem about Michael Jackson’s life, a writing exercise of how to write a poetry version of a favorite person’s biography and a coffee recipe.

Coffee photo by once and future @ flickr

Pot-Brewed Coffee with Raw Sugar and Spices (Café de Olla)

From: by Rick Bayless with Deann Groen Bayless @ Epicurious.com

This recipe is from the Rick Bayless cookbook - "Authentic Mexican: Regional Cooking from the Heart of Mexico" (found under the Coffee section of The Social Poets Amazon store or just click on this book link)

Yield: Makes 4 - 5 servings

Commentary from author Rick Bayless: “Today, Mexico's best coffee is ripened and dried along the roadways in the cloud-blanketed highlands of Chiapas and over through Veracruz and Oaxaca. The prime beans are usually roasted a little darker than ours — almost a Viennese roast — and they brew a nice, medium-bodied liquid with some spunk. They tell me it's the second-class beans that get roasted darker, to a mahogany black with a shining sugar coat.

The steam-powered espresso machines in the city cafeterías extract a trio of ethnic brews: espresso, straight, foamy and Italian; café con leche, mixed with hot milk, French-style (but so common one would mistake it for purely Mexican); or Americano, simply diluted with water. The more rural brew leans toward the Spanish, the history books say, but it seems like a Mexican-flavored campfire version to me.

Café de Olla at its best is pot-boiled in earthenware with molassesy piloncillo sugar and spices like cinnamon, anise or cloves. These days, many traditional city restaurants offer the dark, delicious drink more regularly, served in old-fashioned earthenware mugs at the end of the meal.”

Ingredients:

• 4-5 ounces piloncillo*, roughly chopped or 1/2 to 2/3 cup packed brown sugar, plus 1 teaspoon molasses

• 2 inches cinnamon stick

• A few aniseeds (optional)

• 2/3 cup (2 ounces) Viennese-roast coffee, medium to coarse grind

• *Unrefined sugar that is pressed into cone or disk shapes. Also called panela.

Directions:

Boiling and steeping:
In a noncorrosive pan, combine 1 quart water, the sugar, cinnamon and optional aniseed. Bring slowly to a boil, stirring to melt the sugar. Stir in the coffee, remove from the fire, cover and steep for 5 minutes.
Straining: Strain the coffee through a fine-mesh sieve into cups or mugs and serve immediately.

A few reviews from the Epicurious site on this recipe:

"I made this for our dinner club and it was delicious. Just don't burn anyone pouring the coffee through the sieve! by A Cook from Alaska

"I needed a Mexican drink for a coffee where I demonstrated Mexican Appetizers. I put Starbucks in my pot's filter basket, added 2 Teaspoons whole anise seed and a few teaspoons of cinnamon. The smell was fantastic and they drank more coffee than Sangria! I also had dark sugar cubes for those who wanted it! by petitti from Memphis

"Very authentic. The only change I make is to omit the sugar and allow each person to add his own, as this is quite sweet for most North Americans, and nearly undrinkable for those who don't normally sweeten their coffee. Do use dark brown sugar in either case, and piloncillo if available. If you're accustomed to sweetened coffee, follow the recipe, playing with the amount of sugar. by A Cook from Jackson, NJ

"I used the brown sugar with ground Starbucks, and it was extremely sweet. You may want to tone down the sugar to 1/3 instead of 2/3 Cups. Other than that, very nice after dinner type coffee drink. by Tony from Philly"

Cheeky Quote Day! Women, Cockroaches and Journalism 1 July 2009

Photo by I'm Fantastic @ flickr

From Denny: Summer heat has set in and July has arrived!

Thinking of the bizarre turn of events lately: Obama disinvited the Iranians from our Independence Day festivities on the Fourth. The Canadians followed suit. The Iranian regime has been exhibiting "bad form" lately with promoting a dictatorship, imprisoning and torturing their election protesters. Hmmm... I doubt they wanted to come anyway as they don't believe in independence, democracy or free speech. Guess we will have to catch them next year for the invite. Can the news get any stranger?

Well, while we agonize over the serious problems of the Iranian people we still need to laugh to keep our sanity and balance, so the Cheeky Quote Day goes on. These folks do have a way with words!

This Week: Roundup of Sunday Funnies - Sanfords GOP Outreach and More!

Mark Sanford -- He's Back!
Mark Sanford -- He's Back! (Photo credit: Mike Licht, NotionsCapital.com)
From Denny: With so much seriousness in the world these days, we all can use a good laugh. Besides, who can stay up late to watch these guys when we have to start our work week? :)

Here's a roundup of the late-night comics, enjoy. Also, was laughing over at YouTube yesterday and included this little video gem.

Update April 2013:  Since Mark Sanford is crazy enough to step back into politics after trespassing and snooping around in his now four years later ex-wife's home, we might as well give another round of the jokes that drove him out of office in the first place.  This guy is such a loser and, women, well, we have no use for such a manipulative loser.  What was this guy thinking?  Really?

This Weeks Roundup of Sunday Funnies: Sicko Cinco de Mayo, New Dem Senator

The Tonight Show

Jay Leno:
See all those people on the news walking around wearing those surgical masks, huh? Suddenly Michael Jackson not so crazy, huh?

The Colbert Report

Steven Colbert:
President Obama got exactly the gift he wanted, an adorable new senator [former Republican Sen. Arlen Specter]. I just hope he is housebroken.

The Late Late Show

Craig Ferguson:
[Iranian President Mahmoud] Ahmadinejad complained President Obama hasn't been returning his messages. No offense, Mahmoud, but maybe he's just not that into you.

The Colbert Report

Steven Colbert:
Republican Sen. Arlen Specter has contracted donkey flu. Folks, this disease is now officially out of control. Back in 2004 we thought we had it contained to the coasts and the cities, but then it mutated and tore through the country.

Note from Denny: For the folks outside of America so you don't miss out on the inside America joke: donkey flu is a code phrase for changing your political party affliation to the Democratic Party.

The Tonight Show

Jay Leno:
Biden isn't speaking out so much lately. Today, President Obama took some action. Did you see them together? Take a look. Duct tape. Look.

Jimmy Kimmel Live

Jimmy Kimmel:
We have the first president ever who knows how to use Facebook, but his staff can't use Photoshop. Here it is, here is Air Force One and the Statue of Liberty, and look what else we can do. We can see President Obama walking on the wing.

From the Jazz Festival: Giving Kids a Chance Thru Music

From Denny: New Orleans' Rebirth Jazz Band helps at risk kids discover and develop a new life.

Having worked with Special Needs kids myself I know how important it is to nurture young minds and hearts. When left unattended human nature turns resentful and eventually violent.

What they learn beyond music is the concept of the positive version of teamwork and emotional discipline that will carry them for a life time. This is a wonderful program producing heart-warming results!

Natasha Richardson Mourned as a Wonderful Woman

"Tributes have begun to pour in from across the show business generations for Natasha Richardson, the Tony Award-winning actress who died after suffering a head injury on a ski slope.

"She was a wonderful woman and actress and treated me like I was her own," said Lindsay Lohan, who as a preteen starred with Richardson in a remake of "The Parent Trap" in 1998. "My heart goes out to her family. This is a tragic loss."

Richardson fell during a private lesson Monday at a ski resort in Quebec. She was not wearing a helmet. The 45-year-old actress was seemingly fine afterward, but about an hour later, she complained that she didn't feel well. She was hospitalized Tuesday in Montreal and later flown to a hospital in New York.

Alan Nierob, the Los Angeles-based publicist for Richardson's husband, Liam Neeson, confirmed her death Wednesday without giving details on the cause."

By HILLEL ITALIE @ AP

From Denny: Her passing sure is surreal. What is even more strange is this business of the collective soul awareness. I scheduled a poem on Monday to appear for Friday where I wrote with a forward about, you guessed it, brain injury, this time my own suffered from a car accident where I couldn't write for over two years.

The poem for Friday is what it's like to suffer a brain injury and how you perceive experiencing a 9 month long ordeal for the brain to awaken to full consciousness. I'm extremely lucky to have fully recovered considering the high velocity impact when the brain is only geared to sustain injuries at 15 mph. See my latest post on The Soul Calendar blog for that article about brain injury.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Natasha's family, especially her young children, and friends. She will be missed by many yet welcomed into Heaven. I always enjoyed her hearty laugh for it was so genuine and contagious you couldn't help but laugh with her. Natasha, you are a class act!

Comment from Patrick:

The Lasting Tribute website has updated its memorial pages to include Natasha Richardson: LastingTribute.Co.UK

It's a respectful memorial to Natasha and somewhere to pay tribute to the family's fortitude at this difficult time.

EVERY comment is monitored so that nothing offensive or inappropriate is published.
