Colbert Hilarious Interview: Dragon Smaug, Now Send Him To Eat Congress

From Denny:  This interview with threatening dragon Smaug from the Lord of the Rings movie prequel definitely ranks up there as Stephen's Best of All Time.  After yesterday's outrageous and obnoxious new federal budget bill passing the House, it's time to send a fire breathing dragon to Congress and this White House to eat naughty people selling out the American people.  If it survives in it's current form then expect the U. S. economy to go into a furious death spiral as Wall Street goes on a gambling spree with our money.

Why?  Check out yesterday's post after you enjoy laughing at Benedict Cumberbatch as Smaug's alter ego that has deliciously merged with the monster:  Obama Wants To Hand Over Your Money to Big Banks To Gamble As They See Fit? Seriously?

Obama Wants To Hand Over Your Money to Big Banks To Gamble As They See Fit? Seriously?

Funding bill struggles for votes as government shutdown nears

From Denny:  Forget about being a lame duck, President Obama is now toast with the American people.  Who the hell wants their President to sell them down the road just to make a government funding deal?  Yes, our President has decided, in his infinite wisdom, to give Big Banks everything their greedy hearts desire.  Unbelievable.

Two weeks before Christmas here are President Grinch, and his evil twin, Wall Street Grinch,  demanding that American taxpayers pay dearly for Big Banks to continue down the dangerous road of a constantly growing $800 trillion in out of control derivatives by bailing out the Big Banks when their risky gambling loses.  The U. S. economy only makes about $20 trillion annually.  How are we supposed to pay off this insane level of derivatives when they go bad?

Sen. Warren says, "Not so fast Mr. President; hands off taxpayers' money!"
calling the $1.01 trillion spending bill
“the worst of government for the rich and powerful.”

How can this President claim to be championing the Middle Class yet place our bank accounts at huge risk of steep losses by allowing Wall Street to take our money and play with it without our permission or any public discussion to explain these risks?  How can this President be so clueless as to do Wall Street's bidding?  Just how corrupt - or just plain reckless and stupid - is this White House?

Go ahead; shut down the damn government.  At least my money sits safely in its account for another day and is still mine not Wall Street's.  Clearly, this current government is more destructive open than closed down.

If that isn't clear enough, then now hear this:  Get your freaking greedy hands off my money, Mr. President!

White House budget office holds call to prepare for shutdown

Warren leads liberal Democrats’ rebellion over provisions in $1 trillion spending bill: "Congressional liberals rebelled Wednesday against a must-pass spending bill that would keep the government open past midnight Thursday, complaining that it would roll back critical limits on Wall Street and sharply increase the influence of wealthy campaign donors."

Budget bill: Why one Wall Street provision stirs the deepest controversy:  "Derivatives. The tussle over swaps is the issue in focus right now. A goal of the 2010 Dodd-Frank financial reform law was to shift some complex financial contracts into bank subsidiaries that don’t have federal deposit insurance. That way, if swap trades turn sour, the problems won’t raise doubts about the health of the more plain-vanilla bank.  Banks want to push this provision out of the law, and haven't been able to get it done through stand-alone legislation. So supporters of the idea in Congress have slipped it into a larger must-pass bill."

Concern about those risks hasn't faded, even as the economy has been recovering from deep recession. One sign of the times: A forecasting publication, Gerald Celente's Trends Journal, just included "Bankism" as among the hot trends to watch in 2015. "In capitalism, businesses rise and fall on their own merits. No business is too big to fail. In bankism, too-big-to-fail banks don’t rise and fall on their own merits. They are saved by governments that in turn force the public to pay for banks’ mistakes," writer Nomi Prins says in the journal, describing the trend."

Ukraine: God Hates Liars And That Means You Putin

From Denny:  Listen up, Darling Vlad; you cannot split the difference with God.  You were given a short list of simple tasks to do in this Ukraine situation to help you exit gracefully, and, still you chose only to do a small portion and just send diplomatic envoys for uncommitted talks?  Then you hold a press conference to issue lies and ultimatums?  Perhaps you really are delusional as Germany's Merkel muses.

You are unequivocally disobedient toward God.  You have not peeled back your armed and threatening military troops from encircling the Ukraine military bases as requested.  You were advised, then warned to pull them back, and, yet you chose to disobey that warning, wrongly thinking the stopped military exercises on the border was enough.  Well, it isn't and I'm not happy with that wimpy tepid solution.

You have refused to call back your armed pro-Russia agitators by claiming they are not yours to command.  Quit lying; everyone knows they belong to you.  You insult God by lying to Him.  God hates liars.  Do not continue to be of such a black heart toward God with your Trash Talk to the world...

Wall Street Bankers Pressuring EU Cyprus Bailout, Causing Run on Banks?

Protesters raise their open palms showing the word 'No' during an anti-bailout rally today outside the parliament in Nicosia, Cyprus. Photo by Yorgos Karahalis/Reuters

From Denny:  What a political and financial mess.  Germany at the helm of insistence and the EU bankers actually thought they could slap a 10 percent tax to fund a bailout for the country's banks on all depositors in Cyprus and not get any real push back.  You see, the cover story was that Germany and the EU bankers didn't want to underwrite the Russian oligarchs since 40 percent of Cyprus' banks contain money from foreigners.

Cyprus is commonly suspected as a money laundering site and tax evasion for Russian criminals.  What these greedy bankers got for their stupid move was a run on the all the banks as people flooded the ATM machines to withdraw all of their cash they could retrieve.  That was the fun on the weekend because the banks had frozen everyone's accounts and then closed on Monday to prevent getting at their own funds.  Wouldn't that make you angry too?

From Denny:  Sadly, Susan Rice is not winning friends on either side of the political aisle the past week.  The GOP has tried to hang the ambassador killing in Libya on her though it isn't sticking because she had nothing to do with it.

Now progressives are unhappy with her.  Why? Because of her strong ties to the $7 billion XL Pipeline project to deliver filthy oil tar sands clear across America to the Texas oil refineries.  That mega-project tunnels under a precious underground aquifer - the only fresh water source for up to half of the entire country.

Turns out Amb. Rice owns a huge amount of stock in TransCanada Corp. - up to $600,000.  She also has millions of dollars of stock in other energy companies that invest in oil tar sands like Royal Dutch Shell and Suncor.

Then there are the investments in the Canadian banks that provide loans for these energy company projects.  Think someone has a vested interest in making her Sec. of State?

Why is this a big deal?  Well, for one thing, it's about ethics.  If she was ethical she would have sold off those stocks before attempting to be nominated for the Secretary of State position and stirring up all this controversy.

Keeping those stocks sure looks like an unwise bungling politician at best that disqualifies her as competent for the State position.  At worst she looks like a greedy manipulator.

Why does she look greedy and manipulative?  Here's how it looks:  TransCanada and the other energy companies gave her those stocks in exchange for getting the billion dollar XL Pipeline the green light.

What would she have to do with getting the final OK?

It will also make you want to get your shotgun (if you own one) and run right down to the "hallowed halls" of the financial sector and join the Occupy protesters.  Now, more than ever, have the protesters succeeded in convincing us that all credit card holders are just financial slaves, doomed to serve the whims of Big Bank Sluts and Congress Whores, both whose masters are Greed.

But first a couple of facts to bring you up to speed in case your eyes glaze over when the financial guys on the news start talking:

Big Banks and Feds Shaft Homeowners On Foreclosure Settlement

Big Bank Money Grab
Big Bank Money Grab (Photo credit: Truthout.org)

From Denny:  The nation's top five Big Banks are pushing hard to avoid millions of lawsuits by outraged homeowners - with yet another skewed settlement heavily in favor of the Big Banks.

Yes, the homeowners already foreclosed and homeowners seeking modified mortgage loans are getting the shaft by their federal and state governments.

It's an election year and these politicians and attorneys are actually foolish enough to sign off on this lousy agreement the average middle class homeowner does not want.  The American public grows more angry by the day at being ignored by national and local leaders as well as nickeled and dimed to death with excessive constant fees from every business quarter, mostly from banking.  If this settlement goes through as analysts are predicting, there will be a ferocious backlash come November.

Bigger Scandal: How Big Banks Bailouts Scammed Trillions Not Billions

From Denny:  $7.77 trillion is how much the Big Banks leveraged from our taxpayer TARP bailouts of only billions.  How did they get the federal government to give them more than the original bailout?   Read on and line up an early appointment for your anger management class.  Trust me; you are so going to need it.

Before the bailout the Big Banks only had a financial hold of less than 40 percent of the banking sector.  Now?  Because of this leveraging they now control over 67 percent and growing, growing like their outrageous fat CEO billion dollar bonuses and billion dollar company quarterly profits where they fee us to death.

In fact, after receiving the $700 billion safety net of the TARP bailout (Troubled Asset Relief Program) those same Big Banks had the nerve to lobby against government regulations to prevent them from ending up in the same financial black hole yet again.  "Do ya think?" that Stupid is running Wall Street or what?

How did this finally come to light when the Federal Reserve and the Big Banks have fought for years to conceal the truth?  The Big Banks even refused to give details of just how bad their financial situation was to Congress that was giving them money.  That means that Congress basically gave them a blank check while writing their signature in the dark.  With what recently came to light you can bet there are plenty of lawmakers wanting to change that vote.

Turns out that Bloomberg LP, the parent of Bloomberg News, recently won a victory in a court case against the Federal Reserve and the Clearing House Association, LLC (a group comprised of the biggest United States banks).

That win forced the lending details out into the open for all to see of the financial crisis from 2007 to 2009.  It came in the form of 29,000 Federal Reserve documents obtained under the Freedom of Information Act and 21,000 transactions from central bank records.

The same Fed that kept this huge secret for years now claims that almost all of the loans were paid and there were no losses.  But what has emerged is something far more troubling:  there was secret funding that helped to preserve a broken status quo that enabled the biggest of the Big banks to grow ever larger.  In short, taxpayers paid a higher price than just dollars as it has affected the entire economy and how we do business every day.

From Senator Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), one of the responsible politicians who had introduced an unsuccessful bill in 2010 to limit the size to which banks can grow, “When you see the dollars the banks got, it’s hard to make the case these were successful institutions. This is an issue that can unite the Tea Party and Occupy Wall Street. There are lawmakers in both parties who would change their votes now.”

So, how did this billion dollar bailout snowball into trillions?  It's a cumulative effect for sure and trust it to the Wall Street bankers to figure out how to be opportunists and take advantage as much as they could.  The Federal Reserve ended up committing $7.77 trillion in guarantees and lending limits to rescue the financial system.

From Rep. Brad Miller (D-North Carolina), House Financial Services Committee, "With the Fed programs, there was nothing.”  The Fed programs did nothing to limit the program's executive-pay ceiling.

The outrageous amount of money that our central bank parceled out was astounding even to Gary H. Stern, himself president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis from 1985 to 2009.  He says even he "was not aware of the magnitude."  It certainly dwarfed the TARP program.  In fact, that $7.77 trillion was more than half the value of everything produced right here in America when they rescued the financial system in 2009.

What we all want to know is how is it that even high-ranking Federal Reserve officials did not know the extent of this bailout?  Who comprised the small group making these decisions and when will they be properly questioned?

Guess how much profit those same Big Banks earned from those TARP bailouts?  Try the cha-ching tune of $13 billion.  The Big Six Big Banks are JP Morgan Chase, Bank of America, Citigroup, Wells Fargo, Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley.  The Big Six accounted for $4.8 billion of that $13 billion in ill-gotten gain profits.  Yes, those Big Banks were legendary crooks that snookered the American public and Congress.

So, here's how the crooked scenario goes:  The Big Six received $160 billion in TARP funds and $460 billion from the Federal Reserve.  The program for the entire bailout was leveraged to almost $8 trillion in loans, guarantees and limits.

With all the red ink flowing the details of this financial fiasco were kept hidden by our own Federal Reserve.  Their reasoning was that the secret was necessary because it would spook investors and panic the public to start bank runs, that, in turn, would devastate the shaky economy.  Read that as they didn't want to go to jail or lose their own money in the process.

What is more astounding is how these same Big Banks continue to make huge loans with only half the amount of cash to cover them.  Don't even get me started on the derivatives market where the ratio is more outrageous like 40 to 1.

It's the derivatives market that caused the need for the TARP program in the first place.  To date, nothing has been done to restrict or properly regulate these Big Banks from sending us into another financial recession, depression or global economic collapse.

While the Federal Reserve contends that these Big Banks are "too big to fail" there are many in Congress that contend just the opposite.  A bank that is "too big to fail" is a bank too big to exist.  Perhaps now is the time to revisit Senator Sherrod Brown's legislation to limit the size of banks in this country. Or, in the common man's language:  Break up the Big Banks, NOW!

Jon Stewart Interviews Boomerang Author Michael Lewis About Global Big Banks Disaster

English: , author of the best-sellers Moneybal...
English: , author of the best-sellers Moneyball, The New, New Thing, Liar's Poker, and others at a Hudson Union Society event in 2009. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

From Denny:  This author decided to go on a walkabout.  Actually, Michael Lewis went on a financial disaster tour of several European countries:  Iceland, Ireland, Greece and Germany.

He wanted to view the global financial disaster through the prism of each culture and what a view he got.  (He is also the author of Moneyball that was recently made into a movie.)

In Iceland he discovered that up until seven years ago the only way to make money in Iceland was fishing.  But, seven years ago," the men literally walked off the fishing boats and walked into the banks deciding to become currency traders in a matter of days."

Even their president went around the world crowing about how Icelanders were natural investment bankers.  Yeah?  Where had that talent been hiding for the past 1,000 years?  The country is only the size of Peoria, Illinois with a population of 300,000.

Like typical men they told the women they knew what they were doing and not to question them.  Who needs directions, right?  They took three small Icelandic banks and morphed them into global banks inside five short years.  They amassed $140 billion.  Looked good, right?

America: How A Bad Credit Rating Hurts Us All

From Denny: With no debt ceiling deal in sight, Congress still squabbling and the American public fuming, we are left with contemplating just how damaging it will be to our daily lives if America defaults.

For an economic powerhouse like our country to be downgraded from its AAA rating is humiliating considering our status in the world. How can a country that gives away billions of dollars in foreign aid, finances an endless march of third world governments, no longer be able to pay its bills?

World Debt Issues: We Are All In It Together

Big Bank Money Grab

From Denny: As President Obama struggles with a contentious GOP over the debt ceiling issue, the rest of the world has its economic woes too.

Obama is trying to convince the Republicans to care about the elderly and the American middle class that have paid into Social Security all their working lives. They call it entitlements because we already paid for it in advance.  To the GOP mind, well, just why would a person want their money back in their old age?

The GOP is wearing thin on everyone trying to convince us to feel sorry for the billionaires. Republicans continually make the case as to why the rich should not pay taxes or should Big Business. After all, why should they contribute something to this country when they have shipped American jobs overseas? Yes, the rhetoric has devolved into The Ridiculous.

Funny But True: Exorcist Chasing Demons Out of Big Bank Chase

Category:JPMorgan ChaseImage via Wikipedia

From Denny: Don't you just love it? We are all outraged at the greed of America's Big Banks. Feel helpless? Feel vulnerable? No worries. Your local exorcists are here to save the day.

A bunch of New York City clergy banded together to go after JPMorgan Chase Bank. The ministers are angry at failed mortgage policies that simply don't well address the national foreclosure crisis. I've been posting about this crisis for some time on my American news blog, The Social Poets. Did you realize that over 21 million people are out of work for the past five years? Did you know that over 20 million homes are in foreclosure and more in the pipeline?

Well, these New York ministers decided they had enough of the corporate greed and plunder of America. They gathered at JPMorgan Chase today to close their accounts. They also went about their spiritual work, chasing off evil spirits inhabiting the bank.

Cartoons: Some Hummers to Scratch Your Head Why

From Denny:  OK, these are those wonderfully obscure type of cartoons that some people don't always "get" as to why they are funny but they sure made me grin. Yes, back in the ol' school days, I used to be the toast of the English teachers because I remembered all the obscure peanut gallery comments from those no-name characters in Shakespeare's plays. Never mind, I could care less about the main event but fortunately they rarely queried me on that account. Read that as they believed me to be brilliant, when clearly said probable brilliance was often misplaced - or happily redirected - to more interesting venues.

Yes, my poor teachers often wanted to pull their hair out and sell it to me for a Christmas gift. But, they always said they placed my essays or term papers at the top of the pile to read since I proved to be the most entertaining. Of course, they went about red-lining the hell out of said "works of art" when I refused to follow proper, OK, dull, form. Never mind it was a teaching moment for us both, right? :) Which is probably why I so appreciate the cracked minds of these cartoonists...

Hmmmm....

Gordon Brown Book: 9 Big Banks Manipulating World Economy

Check out the crooked world of global banking.

From Denny: Former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown brings into focus the world economic meltdown in his latest book "Beyond The Crash: Overcoming The First Crisis of Globalisation." This video clip is the extended interview and also an exclusive one with Jon Stewart on The Daily Show.

Former Prime Minister Gordon Brown Exclusive Interview

The revelations of inept government and banking officials is astounding here. Government leaders around the world assumed that bankers were professionals and actually knew and understood the banking system. According to PM Brown, apparently bankers from renowned global Big Banks admitted to not understanding the concept of how to calculate financial risk. That's like saying you don't understand the concept of burning yourself if you put your hand into the roaring fire. Unbelievable.

This Weeks Cartoons: Big Banks, Racists and War on Terror 26 September 2009

From Denny: Well, this has been an eventful week! Looks like I will have to carry over the cartoon posting for tomorrow too as there are so many! Right now cartoonists are still taking stabs at the racists in this country, health care reform, Big Business and Big Banks, the Afghanistan War and the lack of civil discourse when it comes to solving America's problems.

The public needs the President to keep arm twisting any health care reform opposition. Just this week on Twitter there is a guy who claims to be a Marine and put up a story about how he doesn't want state run health care, advising everyone to reject it. So, I tweeted him with "...uh, your health care is provided by the state - why not for the rest of us?" Hmmmm... no reply. Gee, I wonder why. One suspicion is that it's a health care lobbyist or Republican war room account: "Do ya think?"

Enjoy these talented thought-provoking cartoonists:

In this last cartoon the President is depicted in his never-ending Decency Offensive that mean-spirited people find abusive. Talk about screwed up priorities. I thought I'd never see the day when kindness and decency would be so vociferously rejected as an evil. It really does make a person wonder just how much dementia is happening in America as none of this excessive bad attitude over trivial things makes any other sense than to call it mental illness or shriveling brains due to aging...
